This map shows the number of “technology “ patents issued for RFID interrogator innovations in 2003 in relation to interrogator technology.   Technology here means, specifically, “nuts and bolts” hardware, software and protocol.  It specifically excludes applications of  RFID hardware or systems.

In summary, the innovations were primarily in Antenna design, followed by data handling and demodulator  schemes.
